Where to start?

When planning a room (or a house) from scratch I find it helpful to "anchor" a design from one specific point. This might be a lovely wallpaper or a curtain fabric or a piece of art that will be hung in the room in question or a "must have" piece of furniture. When starting out it is much easier to design a room based on a item with more than one colour in the design (easier still if there are 3 or more colours in the design) - it can be difficult to add colour to a room with no anchor point, or a monochromatic anchor.

Whereas -

This barely there dotty wallpaper...

is lovely to incorporate further into the design as part of a co-ordianted scheme, but does not give you a kick start for your design. You've not narrowed your choices, you've left all your options open, so you still need to find the piece that your design will be informed by.
